With Spring Gardens just outside Frome, Vallis Vale is the easternmost outcrop of hard Carboniferous Limestone in the Mendips. Thus it logically attracted the early interest of quarry operators. Certainly there were two limekilns reported as operating just downstream from Bedlam alongside the Mells Stream in the 1840s.

This is a walk along the Mells and Vallis Rivers, finishing across fields on the edge of Frome. These valleys are very peaceful but belie their industrial past. Near Waymark 2 is the chance to explore the remains of Fussells Ironworks and the middle part of the walk is along railway tracks once used for hauling limestone from this area.
