The truth is that almost any sluice box no matter how primitive will recover a certain amount of fine gold even as larger particles get washed away. The second myth is also all too familiar and that is: "I'm recovering a lot of small nuggets and flakes so therefore I'm recovering all of the nuggets that are larger".

I use an Angus with a 4" suction dredge that produces enough water and material flow to fill a swimming pool in short order. Once you get the angle right for the water flow, the sluice works like a charm. I preclassify the material before it goes onto the sluice, so that rocks and such don't bang the sluice.

I have moved up river 50 ft and had to change the angle. Here is a sure fire way to tell where your angle belongs. First off, you will have to move any larger rock through your sluice. If you classify your material (getting out the big stuff), you may be able to use less flow or angle. You have to understand that, the riffle is the catch.
